There are some different paddling techniques that people use.

When you first get into a kayak, your brain is computing a million new things all at the same time.

But after the initial “feel” settles in – paddling becomes comfortable and natural and your brain says “hey … this is nice”! That is !!

Start by resting the paddle across the cockpit and make some adjustments to loosen up. Stretch out your legs – relax your shoulders – twist your neck from side to side to relieve the tightness.

Extend your arms out, with open hands, make arm circles backwards and forwards. This loosens your shoulder and neck muscles. To learn some paddling exercises, see the Paddling Fitness.

Lean Back
Rest your back comfortably on the seat – this keeps the boat stable. Your movement should come from your torso.

The Grip
With both arms comfortably in front of you take the paddle in both hands – over-handed with thumbs under. As a general guide, line up your knuckles with the upward blade edge.

Pull and Push
Each paddle stroke is a pull with your downward stroke while the upward arm pushes the paddle shaft away from you. This combined effort distributes the work. Keep your arm comfortably in front of you (like bicycling). No need to hold on too tight – you’ll find the rhythm.
Leaning your arms too far forward and over extending your waist will just give you back and shoulder aches. Instead – since your torso muscles are stronger than your arm muscles, get used to using your torso to turn into the stroke – side to side. This lends more power to the stroke and saves on your arm muscles.
As you change sides the paddle shaft should comfortably rotate to line up your knuckles with the upward blade – sweeping the water to the end of the kayak.
You’ve reached your goal when you get these three elements all working together without thinking about it. Pull/Push – torso turning into the stroke – steadily sweeping the water. Utopia!
If you don’t get this at first – keep at it – don’t worry – paddling techniques are learned with repetition.
Paddling is rhythmical – it should feel like an extension of your upper body and flow without thinking about it. Once you’re “not thinking about it” your whole body is relaxed and paddling is effortless – in harmony with the kayak.

Turning the Kayak
Turning your kayak is easy. You can turn by simply paddling only one side – opposite of the side you want to turn into.
You can turn quicker by placing your paddle in a vertical direction into the water on the side that you want to turn to.
Once you are headed where you want to be – resume paddling.
You can make the kayak go backwards by first slowing the kayak to almost a stop and reverse your paddling direction.

There are various kayak truck rack systems and plans designed to make transporting a kayak easy. They vary from very simplistic to very elaborate. Some factors to consider to determine which one is right for you:

First, weight and size of your kayak is something to focused on. If you have a kayak under 50 pounds you have a wide range of kayak truck rack choices. But if you have a heavier, longer kayak, like a Touring style, you need to think about whether you will be primarily moving it independently or with a friend. In this instance, a roof rack with rollers help slide the kayak on and off more easily.

Before investing in a system, also consider your physical abilities, the distance you will be traveling to get to the water and the roads you will be traveling on.

There are a few different types and numerous manufacturers of car systems ….

Some accommodate two kayaks positioned on their side

Some are “v” shaped cradles as seen here

Some position the kayak secured with straps laying flat against the truck roof

There is another kind – a hanger-like system that has the kayak hanging off the side of a truck

Good fit is the key – it has to fit your truck rack and kayak properly and be able to be fastened securely so your kayak doesn’t become a “sail boat”! Each kayak should be secured individually – with two straps around the broadest width of the beam and a line for the front and the back.

To keep your roof system in good condition, remove it at the end of the season, clean it and store it along with your other kayaking gear.

I’ve spent my budget on my kayak and gear - is there an inexpensive rack?

Yes – if you need to conserve on money – I suggest that you consider the foam pad type. They’re an inexpensive alternative to carry kayaks to and from a local site. They provide a cushion of foam between the kayak and your truck rack and use straps that are passed through your truck windows. Depending on your budget and needs, this method could service you for a while. I know a lot of folks who like and use this type of system.

Find the right one for you – fasten your kayak and get to the water!

Getting out from kayak is basically the same as getting in, but in reverse:

Take the tie line in your hand

Use your paddle to steady the kayak against the dock, if shallow enough place it vertically onto the bottom- or lay the paddle on the dock.

Grab the dock edge

Crouch your weight in the center and stand

Quickly swing your butt onto the dock

Swing your legs out

Tie the line to the dock – done!

At the water’s edge:

Place your paddle shaft behind (or in front) of the cockpit opening, across the deck

Holding the paddle shaft in place, gently lean on one side to let that paddle blade rest on the ground – this will keep the kayak from wobbling

Using the paddle shaft to steady you – quickly enter the center of the cockpit – crouch – then sit

Then use your paddle to give you a shove off

Again, getting out is the same in reverse.

TIP: In shallow water, you can lift your paddle vertically, (as described above) setting one end on solid ground snug against the kayak side to steady it. Keeping your weight in the center – use the paddle shaft as a “crutch” to enter and exit.

The famous place for tourists at this area is Rideau Canal. This canal winding through the heart of the city was aptly declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you fancy seeing the city while gliding through the waterway, you can go board one of the many cruise and pleasure craft available in the area. The Ottawa river especially at Rideau Canal is also something to behold during winter as it transforms into the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink.

Parliament Hill is also worth seeing when you are in Ottawa. It offers a dramatic view of the Ottawa River and the imposing Parliament buildings make for an excellent photo opportunity. Moreover, it displays hundreds of gargoyles and reliefs intricately carved on the buildings stonework. Watch out for the sound of the 53-bell carillon in the Peace Tower when the clock strikes the next quarter hour. Also, be on the lookout for the daily free concert performances offered by the Dominion Carilloneur. If you happen to be in the area during Christmas season, you can’t miss the magnificent exhibition of thousands upon thousands of Christmas lights stunningly displayed across the hill.

Situated just minutes from the Parliament Hill is the 361 square kilometer expanse of the Gatineau Park. It features various nature trails that wind through forests, lakes and scenic viewpoints. During warm months, visitors can choose from various exciting activities such as cycling, hiking, swimming at Ottawa river and camping while cross-country and downhill skiing are the favorite activities during winter.

By family fafting – you and your family can experience the beauty of the river, ride waves a metre in height, at Ottawa River.

For my first blog post on site I thought I’d cover some of the basics of Kayaking to help people that are looking to get started. The first thing you should know is that Kayaking is not hard to learn but it does take time to master. This means that you shouldn’t expect to be a pro right out of the gate but you will be able to get from one place to another.

The best way to get started with Kayaking is to go Kayaking as much as you possibly can. Like most sports, practice makes perfect and you shouldn’t think of Kayaking as being any different. To get started you don’t have to buy a kayak and can instead rent one from a local lake. Lakes also make a great first kayaking destination since there is usually little or no current.

Start by paddling on your own from one end of the lake to the other. While this may seem simple it’s all about perfecting your stroke and doing as little work as possible to move the maximum distance. Make sure your paddle is making the maximum impact with the water and ensure you’re keeping a reliable cadence that you can keep up for a long period of time.

As you become a more experienced paddler you can move-onto the Ocean or even quick-moving rivers but make sure you go with a more seasoned kayaker for your first run. Kayaking is a great sport and a lot of fun, learning the basics isn’t as hard as you might think, but like I said in the beginning don’t expect to be an expert right away in kayaking.

In recient date I kayaking at end of Maule river, near the Pacific sea.Constitution borders was the site elected.
Es a peacefull place without other boats, only little fleet of fishing ships who went 40 kilometers in sea to colect fish to sell in the tiny Constitution market. Also a group of competition kayak practing mostly young people.
Maule region is dramatic famous because last summer 2010 a earthquake of 8 Richter degrees devasted the middle center of Chile. After this a Tsunami enter by Maule river killing a 100 people who were in a tiny island of sand ,Orrego Island.
The traces of destruction are in the shores of the river but the area is now clean and people has return to normality.
In the past in the midle in 1850 till 1900 the river was a strong liquid road who permits great ship to load agriculture products as wheat, desidrated meat an wine to export to golden rush in California.

Many english, scontland sailors were buried in local cementery.Other remains here and incorporated to chilean society. But with the times the river formed a sand dam in the end an over the last kilometers making imposible the navigation by great ships. Now is a turistic area with a industry of forest paper in the rest of year.

The waters are very calm ideal to iniciates un kayaking. You dont see ourboard pleasure ship and this made the navegation avoid of water tides. Is also a pleasant clima with sunny days from December to end of March and a 22ºC .
Also is posible make fishing but in this event I prefeer only kayaking en mi Feel Free Move kayak. Is very easy to navigates a great stability and very light about 17 kg.Also has a wheel to transport from car to water more easly.

Sea kayaking is other thing for me.I has nor experience en this area and waters are very open and mostly windly.

For this trip, we had originally considered going back to Cedar Lakes, but after the beating we got at the hands of a cold, strong wind on Saturday, Jason and I decided that today we needed to find somewhere that offered a little bit more sheltered water to fish. After a little discussion, we decided that the Clay Banks would be the best option.

When we arrived at the launch, we were pleasantly surprised to find not only mild winds, but a respite from the cold we had the previous day. We also saw flocks of birds diving not too far away. Looked like it was going to be a pretty good day.

Also with us this day was John, and the three of us launched and paddled South, down the bayou.

Here’s a pic, just prior to launching:

We started making our way toward the first set of diving birds. There was already a boat fishing it, but we figured that with our stealth, we could slide up on the opposite side and not disturb anything.

Of course, our plan was ruined by a guide boat running at Mach 99 down the bayou and straight through the birds. So we continued our journey South.

We came to where there is a loop off the main bayou. Jason thought he saw something near the shoreline and started fishing it:

He came up empty. We continued along to where the Southern end of the loop joins up with the main bayou and turned into it there. We fished the South shoreline with no results, but then Jason noticed some diving birds a little further in.

All three of us went that way.

Jason managed a couple of trout here:

I think I also saw John manage one small trout here, but he released it quickly before I could get out the camera.

I was a little late to the party and didn’t find anything prior to the birds and fish breaking up.

Once the birds and fish broke up, we kind of drifted separate directions. John and I stayed on the far shoreline, Jason went back to drift through where the trout had been and managed to snag a nice red:

All of the sudden, I saw more birds. These were hitting along the shoreline. I called on the radio to tell the others and headed over that way.

As I was going there, I noticed the previously mentioned guide boat also heading for the birds. I decided that since I saw them first, that even if he beat me to the birds, I was going to move in on the action.

I did. First cast and I got hung up. That kind of sucks, but it’s the way it works sometimes. Finally got free and second cast managed to nail a lower slot red. These reds were some of the prettiest reds I’ve ever seen:

Caught him on the calcasieu brew saltwater assassin. He tore up the assassin, so in my haste to keep casting at the school, I found a loose assassin floating around in my side pocket. I think it was Texas Roach color.

Tossed the Texas Roach at the school and had a strong hit. Lost it at the side of the boat.

By now, all three of us were chasing this school along the shoreline. It was a big school and didn’t seem to spook easily, but they were moving fast. We actually lost them a couple of times because of their speed.

Jason caught a couple:

John kept hooking up and then losing them. I think he needs more practice.

I tossed the Texas Roach back into the school, had a big explosion and then my line snapped. Was kind of pissed.

Tied on a new hook, fumbled around for another assassin. This time grabbed pumpkinseed/chartreuse. Found the school again, got hooked up. Got the fish to the boat and went to net him. I thought I had him in the net so let up on the tension in line and then found that he hadn’t been in the net after all and had slipped off the line when I let up on the tension. Oops.

Got back to the school, managed to hook another and have him stay on the line.

My biggest of the day. He went about 24 inches.

Here’s a neat picture of John that Jason took. Looks kind of shaky and out of focus, but it looks like a painting I saw recently:

Well, after a while we did manage to lose the school. Jason’s final count was 5. Mine was 3 in the boat and 3 lost. Not sure about John. I know he hooked up a few times, but kept losing them. I don’t think he managed to get one to the boat.

We drifted through the bayou a little bit, I was using gulp shrimp (sugar and spice) under a cork and managed to get a 16 inch trout:

Jason tried the mirrolure suspending twitchbait and said that he had a hit on it. For some strange reason, I happened to have one of those tied on to my other rod today instead of the usual gold spoon. I tossed out there and also got a hit.

By now, the wind was picking up. I went around for another drift, still tossing the mirrolure. I got a few more minor hits and suddenly a big hit.

Trout #2. I didn’t measure it, but it looked to be just over 15 inches.

Tossed the mirrolure back out and after a few casts, it was inhaled by something.

A little sand trout:

At this point, the wind was picking up so badly that Jason and John sought shelter in a marsh drain and I started heading for it as well.

As I was going in, John decided he wasn’t that mad at the fish after all and started heading home.

Got back there and Jason got a call from his work. He had forgotten a committment there, so we had to make it a short trip.

The trip back wasn’t bad, since the wind was at out backs most of the time.

Off the water by about noon.

It was a pretty good day. We found a nice school of reds that were willing to take almost anything thrown at them. Found some trout, and Jason even found a small flounder. Of course the wind came up, but at least it waited for us to get to our destination. Eventually though, it got to about 25 mph. The temperature was pleasant. Probably somewhere in the low 60′s when we launched and in the 70′s when we got off the water. Water temps are now 62 degrees, but in this area, they are a little bit warmer. Probably somewhere in the mid 60′s here.
